Dealing with a Breakup
May 21, 2008
For every relationship you have, there will usually be a breakup. Having recently gone through one myself, I’m experiencing all those sad, mixed feelings. As awful as they are, they’re completely normal.
It’s tough ending a relationship, especially if it was a long one. Usually, however, the breakup is for the better. All that matters is what’s best for you. If you’re not happy, there’s no use continuing to date each other.
Once you do breakup, give yourself some down time and try some of these things:
1. Cry. Just let it all out. If you hold in all of your feelings, moving on will take even longer.
2. Eat comfort foods. Ice cream and chocolate chip cookies are essential. Obviously you don’t want to over-indulge, but go ahead and give in a little.
3. Talk to someone. Whether it’s your mom, sister, or your BFF, talking will really help. Once you hear yourself say why you had to end the relationship, you’ll be able to understand your decision. You will also have a better sense of closure after you get it all out in the open.
4. Stay friends. We’ve all heard the line “let’s still be friends,” but it really is something to work for. If you liked this guy enough to date him, you’ll still like him enough to be his friend. At first, giving him the cold shoulder seems like a good idea and might help you move on, but making the decision to never speak again is a bad way to end things. Be friendly and remember that he might be feeling upset as well.
