Kick Off the School Year by Rocking Out

August 9, 2010

Thinking about the new school year just around the corner is exciting, but it can also be stressful. Shopping for school supplies, finishing that last bit of summer reading, finalizing your schedule, and sorting out extracurricular activities can make you want to scream, “Where did the summer go?”

Everyone has their own ways of dealing with stress. If you’re like me, you crank up the volume on your iPod and sing at the top of your lungs while jumping around your room. Here’s the playlist that helps we unwind:

N*Synch – Bye Bye Bye, Its Gonna Be Me, Dirty Pop
Backstreet Boys – I Want It That Way
Avril Lavine – Sk8r Boii
Britney Spears – Baby One More Time, Lucky, (You Drive Me) Crazy, Oops!…I Did It Again
Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust
A*Teens – Upside Down
Blondie – The Tide Is High
JET – Are You Gonna Be My Girl
P!nk – Get The Party Started, U + Ur Hand

You might not know these, but you should check them out:
Stephen Jerzak – Cute (this song is one of my favorites)
Cady Groves – Changing Me, Or Else, The Life of A Pirate, Real With Me
Josh Golden – Get Ready For This, Small Town Big City, Pretty Little Face

Plus, anything by Ke$ha or Lady Gaga! What are some of your favorites?

Back-to-School Shopping on a Tight Budget

August 4, 2010

Between clothes, school supplies, and the holidays just around the corner, that shopping bill adds up pretty fast. Even if you’re parents are paying for everything, it’s still nice to keep an eye on the price tags when you’re getting all your gear. The two major things you’re probably looking for right now are clothes and school supplies. Here are some tips for saving cash on both:

Clothes Shopping:

  • Stay away from brand name stuff. You can get less expensive clothes that are just as cute as brand name styles by giving up that little logo.
  • Head to the clearance racks! You can find a hidden treasure that no one else will be wearing at school.
  • Look for coupons. You can find them online, in magazines and newspapers, and even by the register.
  • Don’t buy things you already own. Go for something completely different to add variety to your wardrobe.
  • Don’t be afraid of resale stores! Goodwill has turned into one of my favorite stores! It’s like one giant store of clearance racks! You can even sell your gently worn clothes at Plato’s Closet, then shop around to find new items.

School Supplies Shopping:

  • Buy in bulk. I know we all want the sparkly pens and pencils, but you’ll just lose those anyway (well, I always did). It’s cheaper to get a whole box.
  • Shop Dollar Stores. Saving a few bucks on each item might not seem like it makes a big difference, but it adds up.
  • Compare prices online first. Amazon has a lot of great deals.
  • If you have some supplies from last year that are still in good condition, then use them! There’s no point in throwing them aside and buying replacements.

Back to School Week Blitz Kick Off Day 1

August 2, 2010

With school starting, I’m a little nervous to meet people. I am more excited than anything though. The school year is a fresh start, but you should stay true to who you are.

I’m excited to be around these 15,000 strangers who know nothing about me. I guess I’ve done a lot of growing up in high school, because I know who I am now.  It’s strange being separated from a group of people I’ve known for the past four years.

I’ve learned to be myself and if my friends accept that, great. If people don’t accept who I am, then they’re not really my friends. I wasn’t always accepting of this: I didn’t always understand that not everybody will want to be your friend.

When I was elementary school, I was teased nonstop for being a different race. I never got upset. I just got angry, and I started to become the bully. I think I tried extra hard to fit in and be the best during elementary school, because I set these walls up so people wouldn’t make fun of me.

My friends would make fun of everyone they could. They were the “popular group,” and I felt like I should do the same. It was a never-ending battle to fit in. I’ve grown up now, been reunited with a lot of those people I used to make fun of. So many of those people are friends who I couldn’t live without now.

You never truly know someone until you get to know them.
You have to give people chances, and you can’t change yourself just because someone else wants you to.

So, as you get ready to go back to school, remember to stay true to yourself but be open to meeting lots of new friends!  Make sure you check our website every day this week August 2-7 for more great Back To School Topics!

The GWD Summer Swimsuit Challenge is Back

May 27, 2010

Last year, we launched the Girls With Dreams Summer Swimsuit Challenge and we liked it so much, we wanted to bring it back this year. The purpose of the challenge is to reject negative fat talk, whether it’s putting ourselves down or talking about other girls. Listen to how it got started and read more about the challenge below!

Every girl, no matter what shape or size, deserves to be confident in her own skin. Here are a few more tips to help you stop second-guessing yourself when you look in the mirror:

-Try to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, not an unrealistic one. Make sure you’re having a healthy mix of fruits and veggies, whole grains, protein, and water. Try to cut back on or eliminate soda as much as possible.
-Look for fun ways to exercise with your friends, such as walking, swimming, or dancing.
-Watch out for negative self-talk. Girls With Dreams has started a Summer Self-Esteem Challenge. We ‘d love for you to join us!
-Be practical. Find a swimsuit that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Just because everyone else is wearing a bikini or some other style doesn’t mean you have to do the same. When you feel good about what you’re wearing, your beauty will shine through.
-Think about when you’ve been proud about your confidence. Remember those times and use them to help pick yourself up when you start feeling down.
-Have other confidence and self-esteem boosting ideas for teens? We’d love to hear them! Send your ideas to info@girlswithdreams.com or post them on our fan page!
