Are You Soaking Up Summer?

July 22, 2008

jetski1Where has summer gone? In just over a week, it will already be August. Sorry to break the news! I hate to see summer go so fast too. I love the warm days and evenings, the time at the pool, the fresh fruit, time with friends, and all the other fun stuff. But, don’t get depressed that school is right around the corner, it will be an exciting time wherever you are.

In the meantime, make sure you soak up summer! Here’s a few quick tips that will surely help you make the most of your summer!

• Ask yourself, is there anything I really wanted to do this summer that I haven’t yet? Now, write this down in your calendar and stick to it.

• Is there anything you’ve been afraid to try that you’ll regret if you don’t?

• What are you most looking forward to about the fall?

• Is there anything you need to do over the next few weeks to make sure you start the school year on the right foot?

• What can you do to help you make the transition from summer to school? For example, some people find it helpful to change their sleeeping habits a week before, or maybe for you it’s about reconnecting with friends, or just soaking up every minute left of summer fun.

As we get closer to the school year, watch out for more tips to help you! If you have other ideas to share about making the most of summer, please post away.

Thinking About Travel? Consider Going Abroad.

July 14, 2008

lisalaurie2I just got back from a trip to Europe where I went to Rome, Florence, and the south of France. It was the best vacation I have ever been on! Not only did I get to visit another country, but I learned so much.

Top reasons to travel out of the country:

1. Meet new people.

While in Europe, I had the opportunity to meet so many different people. Everyone was incredibly nice and really open to talking to me. People were just as curious to hear about me and where I was from as I was to learn about them. Plus, the boys were very outgoing and easy to talk to (if they spoke English).

2. Experience a new culture.

Of course I sampled the local food while I was overseas, but I also made a point to see and learn about where I was. Everything was so different from the United States, but it was so cool to be a part of it.

A Letter for Your Mom

May 8, 2008

For those times when you just can’t find the right words, try writing your mom a letter and slip it in her purse where she will be surprised to find it.

Here’s an idea for a great letter to your mom:

Dear Mom,

Sometimes its hard to tell you how I really feel. I know I get wrapped up in school and doing things with my friends, but I want you to know how much I love you and how much the little things matter to me. Like the times you…

…stayed up with me until 3 a.m. when I wasn’t feeling well.

…let me cry my eyes out after the breakup and didn’t give me a lecture.

…took me shopping for no reason.

…gave me a pep talk about my bad grade in chemistry.

…yell at me because you know when I’m just trying to skate by and not doing my best.

…waited for hours in the car while I finish practice.

…make pancakes for me.

…always know what I need.

…told me I was a star, even though I didn’t feel that way.

…stayed up late worrying about me.

…believed in me when I had given up on myself.

I could make this list 100 lines long because you’ve done so much for me. I just want you to know how much I love you and appreciate you. I’m sorry that I forget it say it a lot. Even though I often seem too involved in my own world, I can’t imagine life without you. I know I wouldn’t be who I am without such an amazing mom!

Do You Dream Big?

April 25, 2008

Do you agree or disagree with the following statements?

  1. When you get a new idea, do you remember to ask yourself, “What else? How can this be bigger?”
  2. When “I can’t” pops into your head, do you automatically change it to “How can I…?” or “I can”?
  3. You write your dreams in a journal or notebook.
  4. You talk about your future and plans.

Give yourself one point for every statement you agree with. If you scored four points, you’re dreaming big. Encourage your friends to dream big, too, and stay open to new possibilities. If you scored three points or fewer, that’s okay. There’s still time to dream, and you can start today!
