Did You Know it’s V-Day?
April 11, 2008
About 10 years ago, an amazing movement began in order to end violence against women and children all over the world. It’s called the V-Day Movement which is being celebrated in New Orleans today and tomorrow. http://v10.vday.org/homepage
The media has recently featured many stories of women involved in acts of violence. There was footage of an attack against a teacher and a bunch of cheerleaders who ganged up on one girl, to name a few. These acts serve as important reminders of how violence continues to run rampant in our society.
Did you know that thousands of violent attacks against women and children continue every day all over the world through rape, genital mutiliation, and war crimes? Sometimes the problem can feel overwhelming or impossible to change. But, I know different. When I feel like giving up, I think about all of those involved in movements like V-Day and focus on all of the good things that are happening. Since starting the V-Day movement, Eve Ensler has raised more money to help end violence against women than the U.S. government? That’s how much one person is capable of.
Although I wasn’t able to go to New Orleans to celebrate V-Day, I still feel like I was there in spirit. All of us, whether we were there or not, can join together to end violence. Here are a few ideas I had:
– Stand up for your friend the next time she’s being put down, physically or verbally.
– Refuse to participate in comments or discussions that put down girls.
– Send your friends a link to this post so they can learn about V-Day, too!
I would love to hear your ideas! How do you think we can join together to put a stop to acts of violence?
