The Billionaire Girls Club Part 1

May 26, 2008

I have a secret to share! I’m a member of the Billionaire Girls Club and I think you might want to start your own! I just got back from an amazing weekend with the other members of my group: Ingrid, Nicole, Sarah, and Traci. All of us are CEOs of our own company, and trying to make a big impact in the world. We came together about a year ago as a ‘mastermind’ group to support each other in our own businesses. We wanted to encourage each other to think bigger, dream bigger, and make a bigger impact in the world.

I’m going to continue sharing insights from our meetings and group that might apply to your lives as teens. Here’s the first big tip: Find a group of 5 girls that you totally trust and who are thinking big like you. This doesn’t mean you all have to have the same goals. You just need to be positive and supportive of each other. Figure out how often you are going to meet and what ways you can support each other. For example, my Billionaire Girls Club has members from all over the US, so we talk on the phone once a month and had our first face-to-face meeting this weekend.

I would love to hear about your girls club and what you’re learning! Watch for more stuff I’m learning along the way.

Sarah, Blogger and Advisor

May 23, 2008

Sarah will be going to college in Fall 2009. When asked to sum up the most important things in her life, Sarah would say: God, people, education, and athletics. Religion is a significant part of her life and she welcomes any questions or anyone who wants to talk. The people in her life are also extremely important to her. She loves her family more than any words can say because they accept her for who she is and is her greatest support system. Her friends also mean the world to her. She couldn’t get through her tough high school years without them. It’s comforting for her to know she has people who will always be there for her.

She is also very involved in school activities, including the softball team, the swim team, the soccer team, and the National Honor Society. She is also the editor of the yearbook, Captain of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and involved in Class Delegates and Student Council. She loves her life and would not change it for the world!

A Letter for Your Mom

May 8, 2008

For those times when you just can’t find the right words, try writing your mom a letter and slip it in her purse where she will be surprised to find it.

Here’s an idea for a great letter to your mom:

Dear Mom,

Sometimes its hard to tell you how I really feel. I know I get wrapped up in school and doing things with my friends, but I want you to know how much I love you and how much the little things matter to me. Like the times you…

…stayed up with me until 3 a.m. when I wasn’t feeling well.

…let me cry my eyes out after the breakup and didn’t give me a lecture.

…took me shopping for no reason.

…gave me a pep talk about my bad grade in chemistry.

…yell at me because you know when I’m just trying to skate by and not doing my best.

…waited for hours in the car while I finish practice.

…make pancakes for me.

…always know what I need.

…told me I was a star, even though I didn’t feel that way.

…stayed up late worrying about me.

…believed in me when I had given up on myself.

I could make this list 100 lines long because you’ve done so much for me. I just want you to know how much I love you and appreciate you. I’m sorry that I forget it say it a lot. Even though I often seem too involved in my own world, I can’t imagine life without you. I know I wouldn’t be who I am without such an amazing mom!

Getting Ready for College

May 2, 2008

n15900106_36608336_2368Whether you are a senior getting ready for college in the fall or a soon to be freshman in highschool, it’s never too early to think about college. I’ve heard of some parents taking their middle schoolers to college campuses to visit so they can start to get a feel for different schools. One of the most important parts of getting ready for college is the campus visit. If you’re going to start at college next year hopefully you’ve already visited. If not, maybe you can go this summer or get online and see other ways you can get involved and get information prior to your arrival. If you’re starting to look at colleges, check out the school website and look for visitor information. Many colleges have special weekends for prospective students. There’s nothing more important than a visit. Books and online information can give you alot, but you won’t be able to truly assess the overall feel of the school until you set foot on campus, talk to students, to to a few classes, and get a sense for the community.

Do you have any tips about your visit to college? We’d love to hear them!

Save, Give, Spend

May 1, 2008

A few years ago, I learned about a great money-managing strategy. Have you ever heard of having three piggy banks? Every time you earn money, you split it three ways. You save some, give some and spend some. So, let’s say you make $10 babysitting. You might put $1 in your giving bank, $5 in your spending bank and $4 in your saving bank. If you get into the habit of always putting your money into three categories, you will create a lifetime of wealth for yourself. If you have a job, let’s say you earn $3,000 in one year. Based on this strategy, you would end up with $300 to give, $1,500 to spend and $1,200 saved. Add that up over several years and watch your wealth grow! When it comes to the giving portion of your money, pick an organization or cause that speaks to you. Maybe your parents would be willing to match your donation!

Visit www.richdad.com for more great ideas about this topic.

Do you have another way of saving your money?  We’d love to hear about it!
